Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree
Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree
Each year since 1947, a Christmas tree has been given to the people of London from the people of Norway in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II. For many Londoners the Christmas tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square signal the countdown to Christmas. The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is lit on Thursday 4th December at 6.30pm and from then on the lights remain turned on from noon until midnight daily throughout the festive season. The tree remains at Trafalgar Square until 5th January 2009. The turning on ceremony is preceded by carol-singing by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
